SACRAMENTO - California Secretary for Environmental Protection James M. Strock released the following statement in response to the unveiling of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by Daimler-Benz today in Berlin, Germany.

"Today's unveiling in Berlin of the Daimler-Benz/Ballard hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is of great potential importance in California, as well as in other parts of the globe where population growth and urbanization are accelerating. The faith which the California Air Resources Board has placed in the development and commercialization of fuel cell technology is proving justified."

"We are pleased to note that Ballard Power Systems will open a facility in the San Diego area through its U. S. subsidiary Ballard Power Corporation and presently is hiring staff for the expansion.  We look forward to working with Ballard Director, Dr. Larry L. Berg of Calabasas, California, and fellow Californian Neil Otto, Vice President for U. S. Operations, to evaluate the potential use of this exciting technology.  In addition, we will continue to work closely with German government and industry leaders, including environment Minister Thomas Goppel of Bavaria, as the potential application of this and other new technologies to meet long-time environmental challenges."
