SACRAMENTO -- Last week, the California Environmental Protection Agency was given the Barlow Foundation's Breath of Fresh Air award at a ceremony in Los Angeles in recognition of the California Air Resources Board's Clean Fuels program.

"I am honored to accept this prestigious award on behalf of Cal/EPA and the Wilson Administration for more than six years of work developing the world's cleanest burning gasoline and diesel fuels. The use of these world leading environmental technologies provide immediate health benefits and are the foundation of California's plan to achieve clean air in California in the years ahead," Cal/EPA Deputy Secretary Ann C. Heywood said.

The Breath of Fresh Air Awards are given to individuals and organizations for their work to "breathe life into the Los Angeles Community" through efforts to improve air quality, improve the local economy and encourage social responsibility. The Barlow Foundation supports Barlow Respiratory Hospital which aids victims of chronic and acute lung diseases. Along with Cal/EPA, other 1996 award winners included actor and environmental activist Ed Begley Jr. Past winners have included Gladys Meade from the American Lung Association and Tom Soto from PS Enterprises.

California's Cleaner Burning Gasoline introduced this year produces the emissions reductions equivalent to removing 3.5 million vehicles from the state's roadways. In addition, the cleaner burning diesel fuel introduced in 1993 cuts heavy duty engine emissions by 20 percent.

"Hundreds of people both inside and outside state government have worked very hard to make our clean fuel programs a success.  The cooperation we have received from the environmental and business communities on these critical projects is testament to California's broad commitment to environmental improvement," Heywood said.
