SACRAMENTO -- The California Environmental Protection Agency today released the final draft of its Incentives for Self-Evaluation policy which was released in review draft form on February 16, 1996.

The final version takes into account the numerous comments made by interested stakeholders. This policy leads the nation by recognizing the importance of businesses taking responsibility for the prevention, discovery and correction of environmental violations and therefore provides substantial incentives for good faith self-audit programs.

Cal/EPA's policy represents an advancement over U.S. EPA's policy because it provides more direction on the content of an acceptable self-audit program, offers a fee-for-service review and certification of self-audit policies and allows a maximum 90, instead of 75, percent fine reduction for self-reporting.

A copy of the final policy can be obtained from Cal/EPA's homepage (www.calepa.ca.gov) or by calling (916) 324-9670.
