Secretary Rooney Comments on Advances in California Air Quality

SACRAMENTO -- Peter M. Rooney, California Secretary for Environmental Protection, today commended the Air Resources Board Chairman, John D. Dunlap, III, and Joan Denton, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment for their foresight and leadership structuring a compromise between environmental and industry representatives listing diesel particulates as toxic air contaminants, thereby paving the way for the significant task of isolating and eliminating further air contaminants which might possibly affect all Californians.

In his letter to each Rooney noted, "Your leadership reaching this mutually agreed upon resolution will enable all stakeholders to move forward with their objectives to the benefit of each Californian who encounters diesel powered vehicles on a daily basis."

Recognizing Dunlap and Denton's leadership in this often times contentious negotiation, Rooney also noted the advances made under Governor Wilson's Administration.

"By all known measures more advances in air quality have occurred under Governor Wilson's leadership than in any other Gubernatorial Administration in California history," said Rooney. "Quite a feat considering our explosive growth and industrial production these past forty years".

While recognizing both the ARB and OEHHA efforts, and those of Governor Wilson, Rooney also acknowledged other legislative packages, such as the $25 million diesel engine replacement program in this year's budget, overwhelmingly approved by both Houses of the Legislature. "With Governor Wilson's leadership and the Legislature's bipartisan support there is plenty of credit to go around for these record-breaking increases in air quality. Ultimately, however, it comes down to the resolve of the residents of California who demand clean and healthy communities in which to raise their families," said Rooney.

A summary of those advances is attached.
