Applications Available for Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards

SACRAMENTO -- The Resources Agency and the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) today announced that applications for the 1998 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards are available.

"The Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards recognize organizations and projects that demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in achieving environmental protection while accommodating needed economic development. The efforts highlighted by the Governor's Awards Program demonstrate that California consistently is a leader in developing new and innovative ways to balance environmental needs with economic demands. I encourage all to apply for these awards and to seek the goals and objectives set forth by the Governor in this program," Secretary for Resources Douglas P. Wheeler said.

"California businesses, community groups and local agencies are finding new ways to link environmental improvement and economic prosperity. The Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards recognize excellence in these endeavors which continue to demonstrate California's true pioneering spirit and environmental ethic," Secretary for Environmental Protection Peter M. Rooney said.

The awards were established by Governor Wilson in 1993 to honor outstanding achievements by organizations, individuals, and programs that successfully balance environmental protection and conservation with sustainable economic development. The awards will be presented for activities undertaken and/or completed in 1997. The competition is open to all California residents, businesses, non-profit organizations, professional and trade associations, communities, state and local governments, and federal agencies operating in California.

The awards are presented in four categories:

  1. Environmental Economic Partnerships -- efforts that foster unique, cooperative approaches between the private, public and/or non-profit sectors to achieve both environmental and economic ends.

  2. Environmental Management -- Pioneering efforts to integrate environmental values into sound organizational management and/or business decisions and practices.

  3. Innovation -- New technologies, products, services, and programs that have measurably demonstrated the interdependence of the environmental and economic development.

  4. Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation -- Exemplary efforts of restoring, enhancing, and improving California's resources while promoting sustainable economic progress.

Applications are available from the Resources Agency, 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311, Sacramento, CA 95814, (916) 653-5656; or Cal/EPA, 555 Capitol Mall, Suite 525, Sacramento, CA 95814, (916) 324-9670. All applications must be postmarked or received by May 15, 1998.
