SACRAMENTO Governor Gray Davis has announced the appointment of Winston H. Hickox as Secretary for Environmental Protection. Hickox, age 56, a 35 year Sacramento resident, brings a lifetime of public and private sector experience to this Cabinet-level position.
Secretary Hickox previously served as the Deputy Secretary for Environmental Affairs in the Administration of Governor Jerry Brown. In addition to this government service Secretary Hickox also worked for the Departments of Agriculture, Mental Hygiene, Finance, Social Welfare, Health Care Services (MediCal), and Health Services.
In the private sector Secretary Hickox was a Managing Director for La Salle Advisors Limited. Part of his responsibilities included management of a large real estate investment portfolio for the California Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). Earlier in his business career he operated his own real estate investment management business, Hickox Financial Corp.
Hickox is a member of the Board of the California League of Conservation Voters and, from 1990 to 1994, served as President. The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors recently appointed him to the Board of the Sacramento County Employees Retirement System (SCERS). Finally, he is an alternate to the California Coastal Commission.
Hickox resides with his wife, Becky, in Sacramento. He has two adult children and his wife has one adult child. Between them they have four grandchildren with a fifth due in August of this year.
