Secretary Hickox Appoints Dr. Froines to the Scientific Review Panel

SACRAMENTO -- Winston H. Hickox, Secretary for Environmental Protection today announced the appointment of Dr. John R. Froines as Chairman of the Scientific Review Panel (SRP) under the Health and Safety code 39670 (c).

The Scientific Review Panel, an independent panel of scientists, is charged with evaluating risk assessments of substances proposed for identification as toxic air contaminants by Cal/EPA's Air Resources Board (ARB) and the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). In carrying out this responsibility, the SRP reviews the exposure and health assessment reports and underlying scientific data upon which the reports are based. Recommendations are then submitted to the ARB.

"It is my distinct pleasure to appoint you as Chairman of the State's Scientific Review Panel. Your many years of service on the Panel and serving as Vice Chair will provide the experience needed to address some of the challenging issues that will come before the Panel.

I am confident that your leadership will guide the Panel well in its deliberations and recommendations to California Environmental Protection Agency's Boards, Departments and Office," said Secretary Hickox.

"Please accept my sincere congratulations. I am confident California will be well served by your chairing this prestigious panel of scientific experts," concluded Hickox.

Dr. Froines is a Professor of Toxicology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and its Director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
