SECRETARY HICKOX PARTICIPATES IN TOPPING OUT CEREMONY FOR NEW CAL/EPA HEADQUARTERS BUILDING
SACRAMENTO -- Calling it, "An outstanding example of the foresight in the redevelopment of downtown Sacramento.", Winston H. Hickox, Secretary for Environmental Protection today participated in the topping out ceremony for the twenty-five story future headquarters of the California Environmental Protection Agency.
Complimenting Mayor Joe Serna, Jr., City Planning staff, contractors, architects, and State agency staff assigned to the project, Secretary Hickox outlined the role this building will play in bringing together the six diverse entities under his purview.
"Within one space we will be able to address environmental issues in real time, across organizational lines, thereby providing a direct benefit to our customer, the citizen, consumer, or business entity committed to safeguarding the environment and health of California," said Secretary Hickox.
The building, built in concert with City leadership, will create over 950,000 square feet of space dedicated to co-locating all of the agencies that make up the California Environmental Protection Agency. Central hearing rooms, equipped with state-of-the art media and transmission capabilities, as well as a day care center for on-site employees and a revamped, expanded permit assistance and public information center, will be but a few of the highlights of this "green building". Utilizing the latest in environmental protection technologies and practices, this building will serve as a precursor to, and laboratory for, the "green building" technology to be used throughout the East End construction projects.
The building is scheduled for occupation by the California Environmental Protection Agency, its principal tenant, by August of 2000.
