Bryan Ehlers, Assistant Secretary Education and Quality Programs.Biography

Bryan Ehlers is the California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal/EPA) Assistant Secretary Education and Quality Programs. In this role, Bryan is responsible for the agency's initiatives related to performance measurement/environmental indicators, intra-agency programs, environmental education and children's environmental health.

Specifically, Bryan 1) heads the implementation of landmark children's environmental education legislation, AB 1548 (Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003, the Education and the Environment Initiative; 2) develops, plans and oversees the annual Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award Program in collaboration with the Governor's Office, Resources Agency and numerous entities; 3) is the policy lead for scientific peer review, the environmental protection indicator system and agency-wide science strategy; and 4) serves as chief advisor on programs designed to protect children from environmental hazards.

Prior to joining Cal/EPA in 2010, Bryan was a consultant with the California State Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee from 2007 to 2010, where he advised state legislators on a wide variety of budgetary issues, including the boards, departments and agencies under the Secretary for Environmental Protection and the Secretary for Natural Resources. Bryan came to the Senate from the Department of Finance where he was a budget analyst from 2005 to 2007. Prior to that, Bryan spent three years teaching elementary and middle school students in the Hayward Unified School District from 1998-2000, and provided direct care to emotionally disturbed children in Hillsboro, New Hampshire, from 1996-1998.

Bryan holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley. Bryan and his wife live in Davis with their two children.
