Deborah Hoffman, Deputy Secretary for Communications and External Affairs
Biography
Deborah Hoffman was appointed by Governor Edmund G Brown Jr. in November 2011 to serve as Deputy Secretary for Communications and External Affairs at the California Environmental Protection Agency.
Prior to joining Cal/EPA, Deborah served as Communications Director/Policy Consultant for State Senator Fran Pavley, where she implemented communications and outreach policies and advised the senator and her staff on media, messaging and communications strategy. She chose to join Pavley’s team in 2009 because of the senator’s dedication to groundbreaking environmental policy. While with the senator, Deborah worked on issues including California’s Clean Cars Law, California’s Clean Energy Law (AB 32), the Education and the Environment Initiative and numerous other bills and policies involving climate change, toxics, air quality, green jobs, water quality and sustainability.
From 1995 to 2009 Deborah worked as an Emmy award-winning journalist for KXTV- ABC in Sacramento, where she covered a wide range of issues including climate and the environment, local and state government, education, the economy and veteran’s affairs. During her 20 year career as a journalist, Deborah has been honored with multiple nominations and awards for her reporting.
Deborah received her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from California State University, Northridge.
She lives in Sacramento with her husband, David - a middle school teacher. The two enjoy hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and camping in their free time.
