On April 23, 2013, the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) and the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) announced the availability of the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool, Version 1 (CalEnviroScreen 1.0). This tool presents the nation’s first comprehensive screening methodology to identify California communities that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution and presents the statewide results of the analysis using the screening tool. A report describing the methodology and results along with an online mapping application are available. On January 23, 2013, Cal/EPA announced that it had extended the public comment period on the Second Public Review Draft of the California Communities Health Screening Tool (CalEnviroScreen) was extended to February 1, 2013.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) on behalf of Cal/EPA previously released the relevant material below:

On January 11, 2013, OEHHA on behalf of Cal/EPA, convened a public meeting of the Cal/EPA Cumulative Impacts and Precautionary Approaches (CIPA) Work Group to provide advice on a second public review draft of Draft California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool (CalEnviroScreen), a screening methodology to identify California communities that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution.

On January 3, 2013, OEHHA made available the Second Public Review Draft of the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool (CalEnviroScreen).

On July 30, 2012, OEHHA announced the availability of a report for public review entitled, Draft California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool (CalEnviroScreen). Supplemental material with preliminary maps is available on the OEHHA website at http://oehha.ca.gov/ej/index.html.

The comment period on this report was extended from September 23 to October 16, 2012.

OEHHA, on behalf of Cal/EPA, conducted a series of regional public workshops between August and September 2012 to solicit input on its draft cumulative impacts screening tool. Input solicited includes indicators used, data source selected, and how results of the screening tool should be used by Cal/EPA and its Boards, Departments, and Office (BDOs). Additional preliminary maps and other maps for other regions are posted on OEHHA’s website at http://www.oehha.ca.gov/ej/index.html.

The following list provides links to summaries and lists of comments received at previously conducted (August and September 2012) workshops.

After considering all the comments and suggestions received, Cal/EPA and OEHHA developed and refined the tool and then worked with the Cumulative Impacts and Precautionary Approaches (CIPA) Workgroup and Cal/EPA boards, departments, and offices to develop a final report.
